New legislation came in on 1st April 2011

“It is fundamentally unfair that firms get taxed on these properties when they're trying to bring new jobs and new investment into these areas.”

Phil Wilson MP

“The government has imposed an ill-timed tax on empty properties which.... can only hinder retailers’ ability to regenerate brownfield sites.”

Jonathan Refoy - ASDA

“Empty rates will bring more demolition and less regeneration.”

Francis Salway -Land Securities

The government says that “[charging full rates on empty premises] is intended to encourage owners to re-let, re-develop or sell empty non-domestic buildings.” They may have a point when times are good, but who can owners re-let to, re-develop for, or sell to in today’s market? We say this is the wrong tax at the wrong time. Whilst in opposition Michael Gove called the empty rates tax “a wicked and ungodly act”, however, don’t expect the coalition government to repeal the act anytime soon.

Since 1st April 2011 all businesses with a rateable value of more than £2,600.00 will have to pay full business rates on empty premises after a short period (3 months for shops and offices, 6 months for industrial units). This will affect tens of thousands of businesses. We can save you a whopping 70% of this tax.
